Oh boy, did you miss a humdinger of a game this week! We had our 5th game of the season against a D-zero team … this time our opponent was Screaming Chicks.
The weather was looking a little questionable before the game got underway. But there was no umpire to overrule the captains, so everyone crossed their fingers & we tried to get in as many innings as possible.
After the top of the first you could forgive the NADs for looking for the rain clouds as the Chicks hung a quick 5-spot on us. There was to be no quick way out, though, and the Nads had to break out the bats. 3 singles and 2 doubles later and we had cut the score to 5-4.
The second inning was a near repeat of the first, as the Chicks tagged us for 4 more runs in the top half of the inning. We had a little bit of a scare out in the field, too. On a close play at third, a Chick runner slid and caught Cap’n John in the ribs with his knee. Sadly, this put John out of action for the rest of the day. But the NADs were undaunted. We responded in the bottom of the inning with 6 straight hits to plate 4 of our own and stay within striking distance at 9-8.
The third inning was slightly less eventful. The Chicks got 3 more runs to put more pressure on us. But it could have been much much worse. Only some quick reflexes by our pitcher prevented more runs (and quite possibly a broken nose). When our turn came, we pushed across 2 more to make the score 12-10.
In the fourth, the NAD defense stepped up big-time and laid a goose egg on the chicks. The big play was a strong relay from Matt in right field to Dan covering second to snag a Chick wandering a little too far off base. With thunder rumbling in the distance, the NADs provided a little thunder of their own in the bottom of the inning. We pounded out 9 hits (including a home run by Matt) and scored 7 runs to take the lead 17-12.
Rain was starting to fall as the NAD defense took the field to preserve the 5-run lead. And, once again, the defense came through with flying colors. The Chicks could only muster 2 more runs.
Since we were leading, we left it up to the Chicks to decide if the game would continue in the rain. The Chicks said no, and we had our 4th straight victory. We also had our 3rd win in 5 games against D-zero competition.
Final Score: NADs 17 Chicks 14
NAD Play of the Day: That great relay throw from Matt to end the fourth inning. I was sorely tempted to give it to the quick reflexes in the third, but the reflexes were mine and I just couldn’t do it.
NADs of the Day: Arun & newcomer Mike S. Without them, we would have had to play a man short for an inning after John went out injured. You never know what’s going to make the difference in a game
Thanks to Rex, Ray, Dan, Jon, Mike S, Tom, Cap’n John, Arun, Sue & Matt for teaming up to continue our winning streak.
Our next game is Thursday, August 6 in Middletown against Stray Macs. As usual with Stray Macs, there will be no umpire.
Your Humble NADitor,
